Digital pens get better year after year. Wacom’s patented EMR technology has been at the forefront of all those improvements.
EMR stands for Electromagnetic Resonance. This technology can be seen in styluses from major brands such as Samsung, Microsoft, Dell, Wacom, etc.
The key feature of these EMR-based pens is that they don’t have batteries inside them. So how do they work and where do they get their power from? That’s what we’ll learn in this breakdown of the Wacom EMR-based stylus.
This is a simplified breakdown of how EMR pens work, we have provided some useful links at the end of the article for those who want to dig deeper.
How Wacom Pens Work: An Overview
Here is a graphical explanation of how an EMR pen works on tablets:

The pen gets its power through EMR (electromagnetic resonance) , which is a fancy way of saying “it gets its power from the tablet.”
The tablet has a wire grid across the entire surface that generates an electromagnetic field. These electromagnetic fields are picked up by the pen when it approaches the surface.
Inside the pen, there is a coil of wire that collects those electromagnetic fields and transforms them into electrical energy. Something similar to how wireless chargers convert EM waves into electrical energy.
The generated electrical energy is then used to record pressure, tilt, and other data (button clicks). The generated data is returned to the coil and converted into waves that are picked up by the tablet.

Breakdown: The technology behind
The EMR-based stylus works by wireless transfer, conversion and detection of electromagnetic waves. The tablet surface is responsible for detecting and receiving EM waves, and the stylus is responsible for recording the pressure data and returning it to the tablet.

When you open the tablet, you will find horizontal and vertical cables that form a grid pattern and run across the surface of the tablet.
These wires send out electromagnetic waves that are picked up by the stylus when it approaches the tablet’s surface.

Pens have copper coils near the tip that receive the waves and transform them into electrical energy. This energy is used to record pressure signals and button presses which are then transmitted to the tablet in the form of EM waves.
All these processes are controlled by a set of microcontrollers and capacitors present in the stylus.
The tablet then receives the data from the pen and processes it along with the pen position and tilt data to finally produce the results we see on the computer.
All this transfer and reception of waves is done in two steps. After each transfer of EM waves , the tablet waits for a reception signal from the pen. This is what constitutes one cycle. To accurately measure the pressure and position of the pen, this entire cycle is repeated a couple hundred times a second.
Advantages of EMR pens
free of mantenimient
EMR pens do not need to be charged at repeated intervals. They can be used whenever you want and for as long as you want, without worrying about recharging them.
Less susceptible to damage.
These pens have no moving parts to bend over time and damage the circuit. The battery inside most pens degrades over time and negatively affects their usability. Battery-free pens avoid all of these problems by excluding the battery.
Better precision
EMR technology generally offers better performance due to a large number of data points and fast communication. Its output is more consistent and smooth. The pressure curve is accurate even at the lowest levels, providing near-perfect readings and results.

The S Pen lets you make quick notes, draw or edit along with all other typical touchscreen commands.
2. STAEDTLER Noris Digital Pencil
At first glance, the STAEDTLER Noris digital looks and feels like a normal pen, but it is actually an EMR stylus for tablets, smartphones and laptops.
There are two STAEDTLER models for sale:
Noris digital
The classic! The familiar hexagonal shape, for greater control when making handwritten entries on screens.

Noris digital jumbo
Improved! The comfortable thick triangular shape is especially suitable for children’s hands, it is also comfortable for adults and allows you to write without getting tired.

The key component of Noris digital is WACOM’s innovative EMR system. This technology allows the pen to use an electromagnetic field generated by the device’s display (tablet, smartphone or laptop) and interact with it inductively.
This technology allows you to place your palm on the screen to make writing more comfortable, just like you would with paper (the feature depends on the app. You can find our recommendations here ).
Because of this and the ergonomic shape of the Noris digital, you can write without tiring your hand. You can highlight text and make notes on PDF files, take class notes, and then share them without having to print multiple pages. This not only saves paper, it also saves time.
3. Wacon One pen
The pen is wireless thanks to its EMR technology that has great precision with 4,096 pressure levels. It also features a programmable side switch to give you quick and easy access to shortcuts for a smoother workflow.
The Wacom One Pen has 4092 levels of pressure sensitivity and is reasonably responsive. The stylus is battery-free and does not require charging, as it draws power from the screen via Wacom’s electromagnetic resonance (EMR) technology. The tip is harder than most others, so they don’t wear out as quickly. The stylus comes with a small pouch with three replacement tips.
The top is stone grey and the bottom is matte black and textured, making it easier to hold.

Wacom has been making digital pen hardware for 40 years. Their craftsmanship is unmatched and their products stand the test of time.
4. Generic EMR compatible Spen
These types of pencils can be found in various stores such as Aliexpress or Amazon. They are compatible with the vast majority of tablets in the Samsung Galaxy S series, such as a Tab S6 Lite, Tab S7 FE, Tab S8, Tab S8 Plus and Tab S8 Ultra.
